125 Sailing Dinghy
Restoration Project

Late 2004 saw the purchase of a 125 Dingy (sail number 1311). On a lazy Saturday Morning while scanning the trading post I spotted what looked like a bargain close by. A phone call and a couple of hours later, bright yellow and showing signs of neglect, it was now in my driveway.

All the gear was there except for a spinaker pole, not exactly an issue in my mind. Although it was probably still sailable. there was a bit of rot at the base of the centre case that needed attending to and some of the fixtures had been painted.

In this picture it can be seen that along the log are tell tale creases in the paint work. When poked with a screw driver, wood rot was evident in a large portion of both logs.

There was only one thing for it, remove the fixtures and fittings, cut out the centre case and start stripping back the paint. The fibre glass seams where in poor shape so they were stripped also. The wood rot didn't extend beyond the centre case logs, so all in all it was in pretty good shape.

Many hours later and the interior paint was almost all removed.
A new centre case was made from marine ply and jarra and fitted to the hull.

All seams were sealed with epoxy and the exterior was sanded back. The interior received a couple of coats of lacquer. All the fittings and fixtures were cleaned up and relocated. A new coat of paint and it was ready to go.

A nice smooth shiny hull that would see quite a bit of Port Phillip Bay.

It saw a couple of good summers of use before I sold it to make way for something a bit bigger and more relaxing, a Hartley TS16.
